Most people when buying ski lessons join a group class along with about a dozen others. Anyone who has tried that will remember standing around watching the others execute a snowplough turn one by one, then trying one; then waiting for ten minutes again. Or perhaps you have observed an instructor winding down a slope with pupils trying to follow in his tracks as he keeps his eyes forwards and does not see their performance.
An alternative is to try private lessons. Usually the cost per hour or two is the same whether there are one, two or three people. This means that it is ideal for a family to share a private ski instructor, so long as they are at a similar skill level.
You need to get the session booked at the beginning of the week as the schools' few spare hours will soon be reserved. It is worth going round all the different ski schools and chatting to them to see which lot seem to be a good personality fit with you.
In Alpe d'Huez, small group private lessons are available through organisations like British Masterclass. From the first day they will have your kids skiing "sausage and chips" which means parallel carving turns. They call snow ploughs "pizza slices" which amuses the children enormously.
Adults can also benefit greatly from private lessons. Even if you think that you are a good intermediate skier, you can still have much room for improvement. You will have a highly-qualified instructor who will tailor the lesson exactly geared towards your own ability. It is possible to learn more in one two-hour private lesson than in a whole week's worth of large-group classes. The instructor can also show you where the best pistes are - it is like having your own ski guide.
There are various little things to think about to help your stance and technique and you may hear strange things like "hula hoop", "remember to think about your big toe" and "holding baby birds". Private lessons will give you more control, meaning that the confidence that one feels on greens can be also transferred to blues and eventually reds. After gaining confidence you will not be able to wait to try out your newly-found skills on your next skiing holiday.
I would strongly recommend that no matter how good you think you are at skiing, a private lesson will increase your enjoyment of all types of ski runs ten-fold.
