When introducing your child to skiing, focus on providing a fun, relaxed and safe learning environment. After an enjoyable first-time experience skiing, your child may discover a life-long love for the activity. Here's a list of tips on how to best start your child in the adventure of learning how to ski!

Children's Private Skiing Lessons

A great way to acquaint your child to skiing is to enroll him/her in a one-hour private lesson. Instructors are skilled and trained to introduce children to skiing. They can teach your child the best steps to start learning how to ski in a fun and safe environment.

Many ski schools offer private skiing lessons for the parent to participate in the lesson with their child. If you join your child in the private lesson, you can enjoy watching and assisting in your child's progress. Take your child out on the snow after the lesson to play and practice the new skills taught during the lesson.

Children's Ski School Group Lessons

Ski schools are designed to introduce children to skiing in a fun and safe group setting. Children usually enjoy learning with peers of similar abilities. While your child may seem intimidated walking into the ski school on the first day, you will most likely see a smiling face at the end of the day. Look for a ski school that limits the number of students per instructor for a more positive learning environment for the young beginner.

Skiing with your Child

It can be enjoyable for parents to ski with their child for the first time. Plan a short session and focus on playing, increasing your child's confidence on the snow, and having fun. Remember to have fun yourself! Skiing can be an enjoyable life-long family activity, so ensure your child's first experience is a positive one.

Learning to Ski: What is the Best Age?

You can start your child at the young age of 3 or 4 if you feel your child is interested in exploring the snow on skis. Some children this age love it while others may not be ready. Children ages 4 and older are often ready to try group lessons in ski school. Don't worry if your child is not ready at such a young age. You can start your child skiing when they are stronger and ready to learn at a later age.

Before enrolling your child in either a half-day or all day group lessons at a ski school, decide whether your child is ready to exercise and be in a class environment for the entire length of the program. If you are not sure, it's best to start out with a private lesson or enjoy skiing with your child first.

I hope your child's first learning experience skiing on the snow is positive and leads to a life-long love for the activity!
