Mammoth Lakes and Eastern Sierra Fishing

Only one word is necessary when trying to describe fishing in the high sierras: legendary. Every year anglers from all over the world visit Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra's abundant lakes and streams. The beautiful scenery, combined with moderate summer temperatures and prolific fishing waters make Mammoth Lakes and the surrounding area every angler's dream.

June 26 - Bridgeport Fishing Tournament.

July 1-31 - How Big is Big Fishing Derby - West Walker River.

Sponsored by the communities of Walker, Coleville and Topaz, and the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce, the 9th Annual How Big is Big Fishing Derby runs for the entire month of July. July 4 - Free Fishing Day.

Come and fish for FREE in Mono County! All regulations still apply and Report Cards are required -- but Fishing Licences are waived on this day (and again on September 6, 2010). Trout Fishing Season

Opens the last Saturday in April and closes November 15. Topaz Lake opens for fishing on January 1. East Walker River, Hot Creek, and the Upper Owens River are open year-round for catch & release.

Closed to Fishing

Crooked Creek (below LADWP Gauging Station) – Closed All Year. Rock Creek Diversion Channel – Closed All Year. Other closures may apply.

Fishing Hours

One hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.

Night Fishing

Night fishing is prohibited in all Mono County waters except Topaz Lake, where fishing is prohibited from two hours after sunset to one hour before sunrise. Night fishing is allowed on Rock Creek Lake (Inyo County), 24/7.

Free Fishing Days

Two free fishing days are set each year in California: July 4, 2010 & Sept. 6, 2010. On those days, a fishing license is not required.

2010 Fishing Licenses

A California Sport Fishing license is required of anyone over 16.

  • One-Day - $13.40 (resident or non-resident)
  • Two-Day - $20.75 (resident or non-resident)
  • Ten-Day - $41.50 (non-resident)
  • Annual - $41.50 (resident)
  • Annual - $111.85 (non-resident)
